CFM Nears 500 Upgrade Kit Orders

CFM International has received nearly 500 orders for the advanced CFM56-3 and -5C/P upgrade kits. The kits are valued at a list price of $625 million. The CFM56-3 kit features 3-D high-pressure compressor aerodynamics and new high-pressure turbine hardware. These features will improve specific fuel consumption and increase the exhaust gas temperature margin by 22°C, reducing maintenance costs and allowing for about 40% longer on-wing life. Airlines can install this kit during normal overhaul procedures. The CFM56-5C/P upgrade is available for A340-300 operators and shares similar improvements to the CFM56-3 kit. Another improvement is a high-pressure turbine design. The -5C/P upgrade could lower maintenance costs by 10%. According to the company the upgrades are fully interchangeable and intermixable with current engines and are virtually transparent in the cockpit.
