Matrix Creates Virtual World

On show here is a complete graphical flight-deck simulator (GFS) based on FlightSafety International's Matrix technology. The GFS reproduces an airplane's displays and controls at actual size and in the correct spatial relationship and orientation, using touch-screen flat-panel displays and control panel models attached to a skeletal cockpit mock-up.

The GFS is part of FSI's Matrix system, which applies the software from Level D full-flight simulators to the GFS, desktop training devices and classroom presentation systems. The goal is to replicate all functions of the real aircraft throughout the training system, immersing pilot and maintenance trainees in a realistic, common world from the first day of training.

A new feature incorporated in Matrix is Honeywell Rehost software, which directly transfers the software used in the Primus Epic integrated avionics system into full-flight simulators and other training devices. This allows training devices for Epic-equipped aircraft—from Cessna, Raytheon, Gulfstream and Dassault—to reflect the real aircraft with higher fidelity, and also makes it possible to update training devices quickly when the software on the aircraft is modified. FSI training centers at Teterboro, Savannah and Wichita are being upgraded with Rehost.

This year, FSI has installed complete Matrix systems for the Falcon 900, 2000 and 2000EX with the Epic-based EASy cockpit. By mid-2005, Matrix will be available for the Gulfstream IV and 550, Citation Sovereign and Hawker Horizon. FSI intends to adopt Matrix for virtually all current production aircraft, plus some older aircraft that are in service in large numbers.
