Malaysia Airlines Pioneers Honeywell Classic Navigator Retrofit

Federal Aviation Administration certification was announced yesterday for Honeywell's Classic Navigator system, providing modern GPS and ring-laser gyro navigation for airliners built with an earlier generation of less reliable avionics. First in service are Malaysian Airlines Boeing 747 Series 100s and 200s, but Classic Navigator is also aimed at the Airbus A300-B4, Lockheed TriStar and McDonnell Douglas DC-10, among others. Key items in the suite are a Honeywell/Trimble HT-9100 navigation management unit and a digital Honeywell Super AHRS-saving some 100 pounds of weight, and improving system reliability by a factor of 10.
